We did a really fun tour in July 2019 that ended up being our last one before the pandemic and having a child. Several of the songs here evolved and took shape during that tour, while others came into being between then and our home recording session in early 2020. A few are also completely improvised, as has been true of some tracks from our previous albums as well. During the recording session, we tried to keep improvisation and the feelings of freedom and elasticity at the core of how we played all of the songs while making a somewhat concise "studio" document of how we sounded at the time.

Much of the work reflects our relationship to the land we live on, such as the title track "Over East", a poem taken from our informational spiel used when selling xmas trees at our family tree farm. The song "Swamp Concert" is an ode to the peepers and other frogs that populate a swampy area behind our house and make the most beautiful music in the Spring. "Which Canoe" paints a picture of a quiet mid-July night turned rowdy by our eccentric canoe loving neighbor.

Throughout the album you can hear the type of juxtaposition that has been at the core of our project from the beginning. This is true in the sometimes stark shifts in feeling from track to track, for example moving from the dense trancelike "Over East" to the stripped down "Potluck"; and it is also true within each piece. For example, the way that the violin and voice in the aforementioned "Potluck" contrast with the noisy and almost cruel interruptions from the tape player; though there's intention in the warmth of the tape sound, blending timbrally with Mia's voice and violin, it almost poses as a more traditional instrument.

Overall this album represents a beautiful but uncertain time in our lives that was quite literally pregnant with change. We hope you enjoy!

Bio:
Hollow Deck is the Western MA based duo project of Mia Friedman and Andy Allen, a collaboration that began over 10 years ago. Their sound blends and juxtaposes elements of folk music, free jazz and sound collage to create something unique and beautiful.
