Sculptor is the second release of a duo of Ilia Belorukov (Saint Petersburg, Russia) and Gabriel Ferrandini (Lisbon, Portugal) after their debut studio album Disquiet on Clean Feed in 2019. In May of that year Gabriel came to Russia to play release gigs with Ilia and they captured those concerts. Sculptor was recorded in a very special place in Petersburg. It was a workspace of architect Mikhail Anikushin from 1969 to 1997 which was builded specially for him. Place is huge, including a 15 meters height ceiling and very big windows. Because of that it has special sound acoustics, where even small sounds can be audible very clearly. Ilia and Gabriel explored this phenomena with alto saxophone and drums, and continued to add new edges to sax/drums duos in improvised music.
Ilia Belorukov is a musician from Saint Petersburg, Russia. He works in the directions of improvised, noise and electroacoustic music. He’s widely collaborating with local and foreign musicians and performers. Ilia practices an experimental approach of sound extraction on alto saxophone, using modular synthesizer and other instruments. His works were released on such labels as Clean Feed, SOFA, Moving Furniture, Astral Spirits, Notice Recordings, Raw Tonk, Mikroton and many others. Also he is a founder of Intonema label and was one of curators of Spina!Rec label. Organizer of events in Saint Petersburg and Russia, was co-organizer of the Teni Zvuka and Spina!Fest festivals. He writes reviews for Jazzist and notes about music as musicworm in Telegram channel.
The Portuguese drummer Gabriel Ferrandini (but actually born in California, from a Mozambican natural and a Brazilian of Italian heritage) is usually found in freely improvised music contexts. Those, for instance, of Red Trio and Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio in the Lisbon scene and with an impressive international collaboration history: Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Axel Dörner, Evan Parker, John Butcher, Nate Wooley, Peter Evans, Sten Sandell or Thurston Moore, among many others.

A fearless cult figure from New England's underground scene, Sawyer's no-fi experiments with everyday objects and body sounds are greatly rewarding to those who have the patience and curiosity to give them a chance. Bandcamp Album of the Day Jan 20, 2017
